About the Regional Safety Action Plan

Every year, our region experiences a devastating number of traffic-related injuries and fatalities. These are not just statistics—they are our neighbors, friends, and family members. For too long, serious crashes have been viewed as "accidents," but we know they are often the result of preventable systemic issues.

Vulnerable road users, such as including pedestrians, bicyclists, and people with disabilities, face disproportionate risks. Missing sidewalks, inadequate lighting, and complex intersections make navigating our community not just a challenge, but a danger. It is time to shift our approach from reactive repairs to a proactive, regional strategy that prioritizes human life above all else.

Purpose

The Regional Safety Action Plan is a data-driven initiative to identify the highest-risk areas in our transportation network and implement proven safety solutions. Guided by the Safe System Approach, this plan operates on the principle that no loss of life on our roadways is acceptable.

    Funding

This vital work is made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. Established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the SS4A program provides billions in federal funding to help local and regional communities across the country save lives and prevent serious injuries.

By developing this comprehensive Action Plan, our region becomes eligible for significant federal implementation grants, ensuring that our vision for a safer community moves from the drawing board to our streets.

    How you can help

We cannot do this alone. Your feedback is the most important data point we have. Please take a moment to complete one of our two open surveys:

    • Take the General Public Survey that asks questions about safety behaviors
    • Take the screen reader-friendly Target Survey that asks questions about barriers to mobility for people with disabilities
